I have come across various people complaining that some of there best discussion they started are not getting no response at all and I am sailing in the same boat. Can some one come up with a practical solution to that?

try not to start repetitive discussions. before starting, check from the search toolbar (top left hand corner) on whether similar discussions have been started or not. try by asking more thought provoking questions and dont ask anything that require oneliner answer. probably you should also try to get more friends in your list so that they can help by responding to your discussions.

The problem seems to be resolved:) But many of my discussions didn't have even a single similar discussion, yet they are unreplied! And maybe friends help in this situation, I would try. Thanks!!

What's been effective to me is that I made a discusion listing my discussion who have no responses and trying to ask my friends list to post so that they can share thier views and I can select best response. Sometimes I tried to private message a friend that I really knew who can answer and give credible post to that discussion who was been there for long time. Hope this be of help.
