a friend to me is someone you can trust and similar to myself and is always there if i needed anything, like i would be to them.

There is no condition for friendships. No friendship can grow under conditions. Friendship is need based relationship between two persons who have certain common ideals, common interests and thoughts. It is based on mutual trust, mutual respect.

There is as such no clear cut guidelines or a list of criteria for verifying whether a friend is good or not. I think it's time which will tell you whether the friend is good or not.

He/She should be there for the other person when he needs him most..and should help without the other person having to ask for it.....

You don't "select" your friends, you just meet them and hit it off, like a boyfriend/girlfriend.

Every person is different! I have very few friends. And all of them have different qualities. I guess I choose people that are somewhat similar the way I am!

There's a requirement of 'good friend' of coure, but it's nothing you could check-list when you're meeting someone. It's emotional.
