I love a good horror book amongst others. My favourite author is James Herbert followed closely by the likes of King and Koontz. I tend to find I prefer the books so much more than the films as the book is truly what the author intended but sometimes a lot of this is lost when translated to film, also there is nothing more scary than the imagination.

I just read Forever Odd that book is great. It about a guy that sees ghosts. Dean Koontz makes it like the guy or Odd Thomas wrote the book it's really neat. I am reading Odd Thomas now and after that I want to read Brother Odd. He has a lot of good books really.

Shaun--
If you can find it, read a novel by Dean Koontz called Roaring Thunder (I think) I read it like 20 years ago and still thinks it's the best horror/suspense I ever read. He wrote it under the pseudonym Leigh Nichols, but it was re-released later under his own name.

I read some horror books but not a lot. Mostly I read Stephen King. I do read some by Christopher Pike. He can be very good as well although most of his are more on the suspense side then horror. I also like Lois Duncan. Both Pike and Duncan are actually in the young adult sections but they are very good stories that adults can enjoy as well.

I haven't read many horror books and I don't really consider those that I read as really horror because it has a love story. It's more of a romance in a grotesque sense. I love romantic books and even fairy tales. I guess its a coping mechanism for me to stay happy and positive by believing that love does really exist.

yeah I read a lot of fantasy books like Harry Potter and books by C.S. Lewis. I haven't read any love stories in a while I guess becuse i have been to hurt in real life by love so I really don't want to read them right now I like watching some romance movies though.

The book I am reading now is Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz. To my reading the book is more scarier and gives more detail then watching the movie. Of course I like to do both in a way espically with Stephen King books. I like to compare the movie and the book.

I am not a big fan of horror themed books, but I do enjoy books by Dean Koontz when I happen to pick up this genre of book. Who is your favorite writer?

One of my favorite writers in general is Dean Koontz, but he himself proclaims that he is more of a suspense writer than a horror writer. It's true, his stories are very suspenseful - but they also scare me much of the time. I enjoy both of those qualities. My favorites novels by him are the Odd Thomas series and Life Expectancy. Both of those are better examples of pure suspense over horror, probably, but I love them.
Another favorite is Stephen King. I actually haven't read a new book of his in awhile. The one that scared me the most was Bag of Bones. The Stand didn't really scare me, but it was suspenseful and very intriguing. Not to mention it's one of the longest novels I've ever read. But that's a good thing.

I do like reading horror books. I have a couple of authors that I prefer. One of them is Stephen King, which is on the top of my list. Then their is also John Saul, that I just recently started reading. He is a very good author, not sure if it he is considered horor, but it would be right up there in that category. There is also a series I think its called "The Repairman Jack" not sure who the author is so :( , but these books are great as well.

My fav author of horror books would have to be the GREAT one, Stephen King. I also love Dean Koontz and Anne Rice has wonderful vampire novels. This discussion makes me want to go and buy a new book. LOL

My husband and I were just talking about this last night. I hate horror movies but I love horror books. He loves the movies, won't read the books. I first read Dean Koontz in high school and I think that I have read every novel done by him. I'm not really a Stephen King fan but I have read a lot of his work and some of it is really good. I did enjoy Pet Sematary, Cujo and The Shining. Could have lived without The Stand and Tommyknockers. I have to admit "IT" was actually a little scary. Yeah, mystery, horror, suspense and legal thrillers: these are my favorite genres. I'm such an avid reader though, I'd read pretty much any novel except for romance - and if I get desperate enough, I'll read one of those!

"There is a new king of horror. And his name is Clive Barker." - Steven King.
Clive Barker is with out a doubt, the best horror/fantasy writer I have ever come across. I first came across him in the library at my highschool. The book was called "The Great and Secret Show". If the librarian had known of its contents, I can guarantee that it would have been pulled from the shelves. I wont give any spoilers, but I would go so far as to say it (and his other books) have probably changed my whole outlook on what reality can be...(Spooky, Huh?)
I have also read "Imajica", "Books of Blood-volumes", "Weaveworld", and "The Thief of Allways". Some of these might be classified more as fantasy horror, but the occult subject matter, and the authors obvious knowledge of the subject, makes it seem like he's talking of real things.
Long story short, if you havent read Clive Barker, your missing out.
