My friend has a girlfriend who is a Japanese. He got to know her when he went for a exchange programme in Japan for 6 months. But good thing is he's very fluent in Japanese, and that, they even converse in Japanese on MSN and over the mobile phone. If you want to know any Japanese, best thing is to know how to speak and write Japanese first..

I'm from the United States and the way you get to know her is the same as any other woman. You just ask questions. If you only speak English, and hers is not very well, then you ask her to teach you some Japanese and ask about her culture. It will open things up, because it's showing her that you're interested about her language and her culture. It will also help her with her English, or whichever language you speak primarily, because she will have to speak this language to help you with Japanese, and to explain her culture. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but don't get frustrated.
