I was watching tv a minute ago and somebody made the comment "trying to keep up with the Jones". I have always heard this phrase and even used it on occassions. The funny thing is I never knew where this phrase come from and what it really means. So "Keeping up with the Jones" means maintaining an appearance of affluence and wealth for the benefit of others. This world doesn't really respect people for accumulating wealth but for spending wealth. The origin of Jones came about because its a etremely common last name used in the United States and a generic term for neighbors. Also, Keeping up with the Jones was a comic strip in the local newspaper about a competitive famaily living in suburbia. So when you use the ohrase you are really say "Keeping up with Your Neighbors".
So my question to you is what's your favorite phrase, what's it's origin and what do it mean?

I used to work at a bar for a while, one phrase I'd often hear is "three sheets to the wind" when referring to somebody who has had too much to drink. The phrase dates back to 1821, and sheet is a reference to the rope on a sailboat. To have a sheet loose in the wind is bad seamanship, to have three loose means they're not capable of controlling the boat.
