Have you tried all the gums and patches and still have not found an incentive to quit?

I'm not trying.. I'm going to, without any aid.
I'm setting a date, after which I will not smoke. I don't hold with gums and patches as they feed nicotine into your body to stop your craving.

Sometimes the body does not react well when it's source is suddenly deprived

True, but then if it only receives a part of the nicotine you've been used to, what's to say your body doesn't scream out for a top-up and you need to start smoking again.
Plenty of willpower and fresh air, a few extra strong mints in place of your cigs and it's quite possible without the expense of patches and nicotine gum.

I myself am not trying to quit smoking, but one of my roommates is, and he is having a very hard time in doing so. He said he is planning to try out the patches and see if that works, and if not, he's just going to give it the cold turkey, and just try to stop without any gadgets. I keep trying to support him, but I can tell it's really tough for him. Hopefully the patches will work for him.

Has he gone to the doctor to try to get assistance with quitting?
