I think you can go to your friends section, each one has a line that says "notify off" or "notify on" I think if you set it to on then you will be alerted.

Alot of my friends are online and they know when I am online because I use 3 different messengers and they are all on them and we chat daily and email and some of my closest friends even call me on the phone

You have only one way email each on and wait for a reply. the notify on/off it´s only to receive an email each time a friend starts a new discussion.
