I dont have kids but i buy my nieces toys all the time. I dont buy just barbie dolls and things like that. I by books and the alphabet letters and learning matts and things like that. I feel when they are young educational toys are the best

my mom almost never bought me a toy except I got rank at my school or I won some competition. BUt my parents thought me how to use money wisely. ^^ I like that and I think I'll do the same with my child. ^^

Our son is now an adult, so we do not buy him toys, but when he was younger it was for his birthday and Christmas only. Other than that he had to save up his pocket money but usually he had other things to spend it on. LOL
As well as toys, we always bought him 2 books for each birthday, Christmas and Easter. One book would be a fiction and the other factual. :)

I buy my children toys for Christmas or birthdays but not usually any other time. I keep several plastic tubs of toys and rotate them periodically so the children do not get bored. This method seems to work well because when they start bickering over the toys we currently play with, I put them in the basement and bring up a tub of "new" toys.
