A powerful earthquake struck the India-Pakistan border on October 8, 2005. With a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale, it was the worst natural disaster to hit the region in decades. As a result of the powerful quake, more than 86,000 people were killed, 80,000 injured, and over 2.5 million people were left homeless. In response, RI deployed an emergency relief team to Pakistan within hours of the quake. While still in the emergency phases of the disaster, RI launched long-term recovery and restoration programs to help local people restore both their livelihoods and communities through shelter construction, educational facilities and cash-for-work programs. Livelihoods Micro-credit for Women in Pakistan Donate Now As a result of the quake in Northern Pakistan, over 100,000 heads of livestock were killed, and with it, the livelihood and income-generating opportunities for thousands of families, particularly female-headed households. RI is restoring livelihoods by providing oxen and goats to women affected by the quake. Medical Clinics and Health Services Donate Now With the financial assistance of Kaiser Permanente, RI has deployed several teams of doctors to facilitate field clinics and provide urgently needed health care. Since then, RI has established medical clinics in 2 village to treat the growing number of ill. Pakistan Earthquake: 6 Month Report Donate Now May 9, 2006 – After more than 6 months of emergency response activities in the affected areas throughout northern Pakistan, the focus of humanitarian efforts has shifted from Relief to Recovery. In accordance with the action plans of both the Government of Pakistan (GoP) and local authorities monitoring the disaster response effort, RI has successfully transitioned its core programs to reflect the changing needs and situations of earthquake affected persons.
