Hello all!
I'm interested to know if anyone has tried drinking tea made from Valerian root and Linden leaves when they have a migraine (or even a regular headache). This tea has been recently recommended to me as a more natural way to deal with migraines. It might not make them go away completely, but it can help.
I haven't trie the tea yet, but I did pick up some Valerian and Linden leaf at my local health food store yesterday. A warning about Valerian - it smells like stinky socks! You should store it in an air-tight container so it doesn't stink up the room it's being stored in. I found that out in a hurry when I left the baggie holding the Valerian on my kitchen counter for about 20 minutes. Phew!
So any information or input would be very helpful. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you very much for a new method to get rid of unwanted head aches. Up till now I would usually just take a pain killer but a herbal and natural way is always better. I will try out the herbs that you have specified and let you know of my experience about them soon.

Warning: It also tastes like stinky socks.
I've used it as a sedative when I had insomnia, but never for migraines. I could see it working very well for tension headaches.
Let us know how it works.

I dont get migranes but I do get really bad headaches. Send me some and I will give it a try. I would prefer a natural remidy over asprine or ibroprofin any day.
Glad to see you are enjoying mylot.

I suffer from too many migraines and I have not heard of this.
Would you please keep me posted on how you like it?
Do you drink it when you have a migraine or headache?
Or do you drink it everyday to prevent one?
And if it smells like stinky socks...what does it taste like?
Where did you find out about this tea?
I am sorry for so many questions. But like I said, I suffer from too many migraines and would like to find a natural way also that might help. The Gods know that I have tried almost every prescription and have yet to find anything that helps. No, I take that back...I found two things that helped and both are no longer on market...Orudis KT and believe it or not Metabolife 356 with ephedra. I think it was a mixture of what was in the Metabolife 356 that helped but I can't seem to piece them together. And ephedra being banned...now, I am out of what helped.
Again, sorry for all the questions, I am just interested in learning more.
Thanks!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and not minding me asking all those questions. I agree that I like sharing information. :)
I will look into my local store to see if they have any. Thank you so much for sharing. And even though I do not wish you to have a migraine, I will be looking for your next thread when you do get a chance to try it. Hopefully, it is not the near future for you.
Thanks again!

I'll have to look into this one...
Feverfew is also said to be good for migranes!

That's what I've heard as well, but isn't it usually used as a preventative?

I would be interested to know how the tea works. I'm afraid I would not be able to us it because I get nauseous when I have a migraine and can't keep anything down, let alone some stinky tea. Good luck with it, and report back!

Personally we use Creeping Charlie which is also called Ground Ivy as it works really well. It is a lawn weed and and is in the mint family.
Glechoma hederacea is its formal name. It dries nicely and brew a off tasting tea however it does work! Valerian will make you sleepy so if you are laying around in deep pain then that may not be an issue. There are 2 species of Valerian too. Need to know which one you have. For the linden the flower and leaf is used and I see that it could be used for this OK. We just have found our rampant weed actually has a use hahaha so we gather and dry it far from traffic and pets. Herbs are a great way to go! Good luck!

Wow, thank you so much for the information! It sounds like you have some experiences with natural remedies. Thanks for posting!
Creeping Charlie - I hadn't heard of that. I'll have to look around for it. What type of climate do you live in that it grows naturally where you are? As with everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter where I am, no nothing is currently growing. ;)
And thanks for the tip about the two different Valerian species. Which one should we look for?
Great comment, and thanks again!

I have tried Valerian and,...YUCK! It tastes like wet grass horses have farted in. (not to know what that tastes like, don't get me wrong). I do know it will help you relax and sleep. As far as the other,...I am unsure what Linden leaf is. My favorite remedy is a small cup of black coffee.
blessed be

Hahahaha!! That is the best description ever! :D Thanks for the very descriptive warning. ;) I'll make sure to brace myself when I try the tea.
And I've heard from some people that black coffee works for them. A good friend of my family brews up a pot of strong coffee when she feels a migraine coming on. Me, coffee at the point might just make my head explode! I'd love to have coffee as a remedy for me as I love coffee. I'm glad you've found something that works for you!
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Sorry if I am delighted that you all have migraines. I have suffered from migraines for 4 years now with no end in sight. I have almost daily migraines/cluster headaches. The doctor prescribed me an anti-seizure med to control it but for some reason it made me uncontrollably angry. I got so upset one day that I felt I was going to hurt my kids. I called my husband home from work to take the kids, I felt that dangerous. And that was the last day I took it. It worked to stop the migraines but it was not worth the risk. Let me know how it works because I would like to find something to help.

I have never tried the Linden leaf but I quite frequently drink Valerian root tea for migrains. I also take a supplement that has valerian root in it and it seems to help. I have also found that taking SlowMag twice a day has requced my migraines.
