One of my counsins has had a ating-disorder for many years now and even though se at times seems to be recovering it always comes back to haunt her. She is NOT fat in my or any other peoples eye - actually she is to thin but when she looks in the mirror all she see is a fat girl who is not even worthy of beeing on this planet. It seems as though there is little knowledge about this since noone seems to know how they can help her - even doctors seems to have been given up. Anyone has any advice - maybe someone recovered from it and can share some advice...

Has she been to any inpatient programs for people with eating disorders? In the U.S. we have some really good programs for helping those with anorexia and bulimia. I would think that you would have something similar in Sweden. There is one center outside of NY City where I have referred 2 patients, and they both have done really well. If an inpatient program is not possible, does she at least see a specialist who treats only those with her eating disorder? Maybe she could get into some intensive outpatient counseling and group therapy. Eating disorders require lifetime monitoring and treatment, because the victims tend to relapse if they are not in treatment. I hope that she gets the help that she needs. You must be very worried about her.

She is in a program now that seems to be working. however she is very good at hiding stuff so she still needs to be watched. It seems though as if she really wants to recover from it. Thanx!

I'm glad that she's in a good program. This is similar to treating addictions, where the person gets very good at hiding things and manipulating others into believing that they are OK. With consistent treatment, she should do well.

Oh dear, i am sorry to hear that, but i am happy that she is in treatment now. it does seem like an never ending story when you have an eating disorder, it is one of the hardest things that can be. i know only one thing, that she will have to face some problem that appeared in her childhood, and has it's effects in a very acutec way. she has to solve this problem and face it. this is one of the hardest tasks that a person is supposed to face when he or she has an eating disorder. i know that usually people with an eating disorder, are trying to erase their body appearance and vanish in some way. i really hope that she can solve this problem in this treatment center.
