I started liking rent when I was a sophmore in high school. I loved the music and the craze continued when I saw it musical live when I was 19. I loved it. I was happy when they finally released it on DVD. Tell me your thoughts on the movie and your favorite parts, songs. characters, and actors?

The first time i saw rent i thought it was the weirdest show i ever saw. Then it grew on me. Of course my favorite character is Angel. All the songs are excellent. My sister saw this show live on broadway and says the songs are different when they do it live and the show is more risque.

The show live is much different, and in my opinion, even better. The show includes a song cut from the movie, called Contact, which is probably what she meant by risque.

at first i was worried that i wouldn't like it because i'm such a big fan of the play and sometimes plays don't translate well on screen. but i have to say i like the movie as much as i like the play.

I was the same way, sloanjosiecat79. Plays, like books, can either be great or horrible when made into a movie. Did you know that Adam Pascal expressed a similar nervousness about it? He considered not even doing the movie because he didn't want to be a part of "the bad movie" if it turned out that way, and then be remembered for that instead of his role in the Original Broadway Cast.

I saw RENT the first time it toured - and two other times. I love RENT. It's my absolute favorite musical. I really love all the music, and all the characters. I think it's raw and it's real. The movie was so-so. It was good in that it made things more understandable - there was a lot of things my mom didn't understand from the musical and it was made clearer in the movie. It's good they got almost all the actors & actresses from the original broadway. My favorite character is Mimi. I love how free spirited she is. I love Angel too. He/She is a riot. My favorite songs are "Would You Light My Candle", "Out Tonight", "One Song Glory", "Today 4 U", "Santa Fe", "I Should Tell You", "Seasons of Love" and I don't know what the name of the song is but I love when the support group sings "there's only us"...I am getting goosebumps all over just thinking about it.

The song you can't think of is NO Day But TODAY. The music is great. I had it in my head forever after seeing the movie.

I live in the southern boondocks and have missed out on a lot of cultural nuances so I never ever heard of RENT before it was released in theaters. Since then i have become almost a nut, recommending and watching it over and over again. I love it and cannot wait to see it performed someday.

I fell in w/ it after I ordered & recorded it On Demand. I watched it again right after I watched it the first time, and I've been loving it every since.
My favorite character is Angel, My favorite part is the La Vie Boheme scene, My favorite song is "Out Tonight", and my favorite actor is Wilson Heredia, Jesse L. Martin, and Tracy.

Oooh! I really loved the movie. :D My boyfriend lent me his DVD and soundtrack this summer and after watching it, I'm hooked! I love the songs and the characters. I especially loved "I'll Cover you (Reprise)" and "Seasons of Love". I've memorized the lyrics after about a week of listening to them. Haha :D I loved the "Goodbye Love" scene on the cemetery, I was really pissed that they cut it out of the movie. I thought that scene was essential, it showed all the characters together and how they were hurting and yearned for each other but they were also breaking apart. In the movie, I really loved Angel and Mark. I'm not really sure why though. Everybody was great. I wasn't sure about Rosario Dawson's voice at first but it turned out okay (probably tweaked). If I had the chance I'd probably watch the Broadway show. That would be great!

I didn't get to watch it on Broadway, but I want too...But I did get to see it live, which was so awesome. My favorite character was Tom Collins, only cause I may have a small crush on Jesse L. Martain.

I completely agree. It's so much better live, though the movie allows more people to see it.

I first fell in love with Rent when it came out on DVD. I think I was one of the luckiest people in the world to have seen it like I did: curled up on my couch, with a big bowl of popcorn, a big box of kleenex and NOT A SINGLE CLUE what the show was all about. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, I moaned, I bawled. And then I shared the movie with my kids. And they did all that. And then my two oldest (13 and 10) got into the soundtrack. By Easter of this past year, they'd memorized the movie and the soundtrack and we dubbed ourselves official Rentheads LOL. I think, collectively our favourite scene/song is La Vie Boheme because it's the entire cast, and my second favourite is Out Tonight. I love Rosario Dawson and the way she plays Mimi. I was 17 in 1989 and I remember feeling like she did, wanting nothing more than to get out of her cage (though my cage was decidedly different) and get out and howl. hehehe. Okay, I've prattled on long enough. Rent has joined the ranks of my top favourite movies/musicals of all time.

Oh, I completely understand that. *points to username* I've got my mom and several friends hooked now. I had no idea what it was about the first time either. I'd never even HEARD of it, just picked it up and went "huh, okay, we'll try this".

I am completely addicted to this musical! I love all the characters, and how in the end they overcome their differences to realize that in a tough world, they always have each other. This movie is awesome because it takes me through the gammot of emotions, from humor to sadness to love. My favorite song is "Take Me or Leave Me" which shows that even though the two characters might be lesbian, they have relationship issues and want to be loved just as everyone else.

I saw the movie for the first time a few weeks ago. I absolutely loved it. In some respects I think the movie did a better job of getting the story across. I like the fact that they used mostly the original cast. They only took out songs that I don't like anyway, but I'm okay with that. I love the santa fe scene.

Rent is my favorite musical of all time. It was Rent that got me into musical theatre to begin with, and now I'm completely obsessed with all things Broadway. I think the movie was done well, especially compared to other movies based off of Broadway plays/musicals. I love that most of the cast was the Original Broadway Cast, and that both Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms managed to fit in so well. A large part of what makes Rent so amazing is the emotion, so it's important for the cast to be bonded enough to pull that off. Of course, I do have minor criticisms of the movie- the whole getting "engaged" thing seems very out of character for Maureen, who has trouble with commitment and is consistantly cheating on her partners. I also wish they had left some of the lines sung, as opposed to changing them to speaking. Overall, though, the movie was extremely well done and is an excellent representation of my favorite musical.

Well I got the movie but did not know what it was about. It was ok. I did not expect it to be so dramatic. I thought it would be a fun loving flick... But I should have known better since it was a braodway production. I liked the music but it got to me after a while. I really like fun silly movies...
