should us kids be allowed to pray at school,without having to ask for permission

I was at school today, praying before i ate, and a teacher had walked up to me, and said, "did you get permission to do that? I replied with a no, but then saying i dind't think that it was a big deal, i wasn't bothering anyone? and then she got smart and said, this is private grounds
