Wow. Tough question. Having worked in a nursing I seen quite a lot of different cases of abuse to the elderly. Such a shame.
I would suggest before placing our elderly people in the nursing home to maybe consider getting a home nurse like a CNA or a Home health Aide to care for the elderly person at their home. At least the family can have a better control on how their loved one is being cared for.
But if a nursing home is the only alternative then doing some full investigation of the nursing home before placing the relative in there is suggested. It is so terrifying to even think that people abuse the elderly, but it happens. So maybe checking out the nursing facility different times of the day and speaking with residents that live there and staff will help determine if that nursing care facility might be a safe one.
