Second-hand smoke and the effect on children?

Everyone is critical of women who drink while they are pregnant. What about mother's and father's who smoke around their newborn or older children? We already know that second-hand smoke contributes to SIDS deaths, asthma, allergies, and lung cancer. Is it okay for a mother to smoke while she is pregnant? I've seen many who do. What about after the baby is born? Can either parent smoke guilt free at that time?

Personally, I think that smoking is a very wrong thing to do to your body. It becomes a crime when you smoke infront of others, because they too become passive smokers.
It is very bad to smoke infront of children. It damages their health. It also gives them the wrong signals that smoking is good. Children are influenced by their parents. This kind of habit is not good. In India, I have not seen parents smoking in front of children. But in other place, if they do, I request them to stop this injustice towards their children.

Second hand smoke can actually cause ear infections in children. I was exposed to a lot when I was younger and always had very bad ear infections. I didn't find out the link between the who until I was much much older. Smoking can cause smaller babies, birth defects and many other problems. I think everybody (well I thought they did anyway) already knows that it's not ok to smoke when pregnant. Any one who does isn't a fit mother.

I don't think women should smoke when pregnant, and I don't think they should smoke around their children. I'm a strong advocate of people being allowed to do what they want with their body, but when it effects other people then they have to take those other people into consideration.
My mother smoked when she was pregnant with me - she'd been told she couldn't have any more children and was heading to early menopause, and didn't know she was pregnant until well into the pregnancy - and it *did* effect my health.

I don't think that pregnant women should smoke even if it is never fully proven that it will harm the child. It's something that isn't worth taking the risk! I think it's just a bit irresponsible!

As I heard from somebody a passive smoker is more or less same affected like a active smoker. So we should take care of our children during smoking. It is desirable not to smoke in front of children.

I think that my parents who smoked when i was growing up have inadvertently given me cancer that will affect me by 50.
as for who can prove that, no one, bu ti think that it is true.... i mean, why else is second-hand smoke so bad, if it does nothing?

I had seen a report that claimed second-hand smoke is more harmful for the people, especially for the kids because their lung is undergrown. Lucky me, my parents don't smoke. I don't smoke neither. Sometimes, I just can't understand those smokers who claimed smoking could help them relax their body and nerve. Smoking is mainly cause of the lung cancer. Therefore, please don't smoke, dear fellows!

Great point! I actually started a thread today about parents smoking in cars with children inside... I would not like to take any adults choice away in regards to wanting to smoke. However I do think that parents have a duty of care around protection their childrens health. During pregnancy and after the child is born. If people want to smoke they should do it outside away from their children and other non-smokers. I feel really strongly about this as it's such a small thing that people can do to protect the health of others.

A mother shouldn't smoke while pregnant and the parents shouldn't smoke around the child. I smoke. I quit when I found out I was pregnant and I smoke outside after the kids are in bed or when I'm out at work.

Second hand smoke are far more dangerous for children compared to the one smoking. Second hand smoke is not filtered, that's why this unfiltered smoke is more lethal compared to the one inhaled by smokers.

If you were giving your kid an advice about a situation, would you just imagine yourself dealing with the same situation, or you're just gonna advise him to do the right thing, regardless?? I know...

I think no one should do it but also I think we should not smoke at all or at least not in public places. Because it can cause problems to other small children and adults as well. So we should discourage smoking at every level.
