!!!!!!!!!!PLEASE DO NOT POST SPAM!!!!!!! I would like to hear your views on the best and worst of the internet. I will not visit any linked sites. I think that the internet has changed the world dramatically so far in many different ways. I'd love to hear your stories and opinions; Did ebay mare you an armchair tycoon? have you become bankrupt through online poker addiction? Did you meet your spouse online? Has e-commerce ruined your business or taken your livelihood? Do you think that 'free' music and video downloads are crime or freedom of information? Let's hear what you have to say?!

Five interesting questions! Did ebay make you an armchair tycoon? Not yet! I haven't done more than buy one item for a gift on Ebay yet. For most people it is a hobby, rather like a glorified garage sale. Some people do make a living out of it and, as in the real world, there are some people who are less than honest or good sellers and buyers. One just needs to be aware and use due caution. Have you become bankrupt through online poker addiction? Fortunately, no, I have never attempted online poker. I have spoken to a number of people who do and, of course, one only hears about their successes! Did you meet your spouse online? No, I met my spouse long before the Internet was invented. I have made some very good friends online, though, some of which I look forward to meeting some day. Has e-commerce ruined your business or taken your livelihood? E-commerce is certainly changing the way that people do business. Any business, though, that finds its trade affected in this way is not worth its salt if it merely moans about the drop in sales. It is not expensive or difficult to set up an online business and every healthy business should be flexible and proactive enough to have its finger on the pulse of market trends and adapt to meet them. Sometimes, though, it is inevitable that a small business is overwhelmed by a large chain. That happens in the high street as well as on the internet. Do you think that 'free' music and video downloads are crime or freedom of information? I think that the peer-to-peer swapping of music and video is as much a crime as shoplifting a CD or video from a store. Musicians and actors deserve to earn their money as much as anyone else and should be protected from people who have no conscience about stealing. To call this illegal trade 'freedom of information' is a blatant mis-information and mis-representation! It is in a different league from taking a few fallen apples from a farmer's orchard.

You seem to have put the answers that I would have given myself. The only exception is music downloads. I used to think it was fantastic to be able to download music for free, but then I wa hit with a virus and lost a lot of things from my computer when I had to format it. I guess sites like i-tunes have cleaned that stuff up, since it's not peer-to-peer then you don't get the malicious types putting out viruses. Your view is right where the 'little' artists are concerned but I certainly don't mind that the big record labels miss out on their 'cut'. I think that downloads of these things should certainly be a lot cheaper than they currently are ,due to the minimal costs involved.

Wow, I've got a big list of positive things the internet has done for me. Like meeting new people from all over the world, finding information, buying rare items, learning new things, but most importantly, I met a certain Londoner online and if neither one of us had internet, we would've never met. :( Worst things? Hmmm... I might have to get back to you on that. I can't think of anything right now.

I think there is a bit of duality in the internet. To me the best, most basic, aspect of the internet is it has made information freely and imedietly available. You can see, hear, and learn ANYTHING you put your mind to. Unless of course you live in a country that restricts your access to certain sites. The worst, most basic, aspect of the internet is it has made information freely and immedietly available. You have to verify what you read, you can learn, see and hear anything you want, such as how to commit crimes, how to lie and cheat, and watch people do horrible things to and with eachother. Want to learn how to write computer code, go tot he net. Want to learn a new recipe or how to fix your car? Go to the net. Want to watch a young child be molested and abused by older men? Go to the net. It symbolizes the best and worst in mankind, merely a mirror of society that sometimes show us an ugly face. Force

Well, I think I'M better off for it. I've benefited by being on the net n a few ways. But for those that have been somehow hurt by it I'd say no. It's relative I think.Depending on your experience. I may have never had the opportunity to interact with people in India, Netherland, Belgium, etc. but i do nearly everyday. You have to make it what you want it to be, and be careful. Be very very carefuol. Force

I have not had any ill effects of the internet as of yet. The greatest thing the internet has done for me is make it possible to get rid of tons of cookbooks, encyclopedias, dictionarys, etc. I still have a few cookbooks but if I want to make scalloped corn it is much easier to just type scalloped corn into the browser and up pops a recipe. No more searching through pages of recipes.

Thanks, that's sort of a mixture of benefits! You have benefitted financially by selling your unwanted items and also by the availability of information for free online. I suppose the downsides to this are that the book publishers are losing money, but on the other hand, it's more environmentally friendly to spread info without using paper...

It has made the whole world into a single village. The communication through mails and chat services has made us to feel better even though we are thousand of miles apart.Shopping online and thus avoiding to wait in long queues and online banking has helped me a lot.I am having a kid and whenever i gets doubt regarding anything about well being or some common ailmenats,i just check the web and i will get ponder of ideas and ways to overcome my problem.Sure internet is beneficial.worst thing- is my spouse will go deeper into the net and i also come here to mylot and we rarely talk with each other.it makes us lazy.

I find it a useful tool, but I'm old-fashioned enough to find it funny when two people sit in a room with their backs to one another and not speaking because they're in chatrooms with people on the other side of the world!!

Well, for me, the internet has changed my life drastically...in a good way that is. See, 4 yrs and a half ago, I met this wonderful guy who is now my husband. I think without the internet, I might not be married today. Why you say? Because of the way i look. I am not ugly or anything, but am overweight, but my husband still gave me a chance because he got to know the true me by talking with me, before seeing and judging me. I love him for accepting me the way i am, and helping me deal with it without pushing me to do something about it.

That's lovely. Talking online does provide anonymity and lets you only divulge things when you decide to. As you say, people make a lot of snap decisions on appearance, but would your husband not have given you any attention if he met you in person and seen your shape?

I love the internet. We are able to work from home full time just by promoting our website. Also, I don't know how people live without the internet. I use it constantly for looking up things.

I think internet has changed our lives in many ways, both good and bad.It has given us the luxury to acces each and everything from the comfort of our homes which on the other hand has made us all bunch of lazy lumps. It has also increased piracy and also nowadays a lot of security threats are there regarding cyber crimes. So in my opinion it has been a blessing in disguise.
@rhinoboy (2129)

Piracy is a big issue for owners of copyright, I'm sure I wouldn't be pleased if my income was affected. I think it brings benefits too, through mass exposure. Sandi Thom recenttly had a UK #1 hit through becoming famous for her webcast performances.

Best thing is I was able to call my husband while he was away for free thru Skype. And there are more constand communications with my relatives through out the world that I usually just get cards during holidays but now a days I get mails and pictures almost every week and updates. Love it. I have not experience a bad thing thru the internet yet, hopefully I wont have.

That's fantastic to hear. I remember before skype came out, I used to voice-chat to friends on yahoo messenger or msn while surfing and it never cost me a penny! I don't have many distant relatives who use the internet but I keep in touch with some people a lot more often by email than i would in person or on the phone.

I think that despite the recent flogging the internet is getting about its negative impact on relationships, that relationships are exactly what the internet has given us. I feel like there is a world of people who may be suited to play an important role in my life and I would never meet them if not for the internet and its immediate, far-reaching communication aspects. I met my husband online, one of my bridesmaids, the Godparents of my daughter, and the list goes on. While the internet was my first contact with these people, I went on to enjoy a more traditional relationship of phone calls and in-person time together.

That's wild! I've met a few people who found friends or partners online, but never anyone who found a whole social network! Are you american? I gather that since widespread access took off in the US a lot sooner than here in the UK, then it's had more time to take effect.

Internet is like a fire. As fire can be used for good things as well as bad things, so is internet. If one use Internet to harm others and gain himself, it is possible. If one uses Internet to gain himself and others for good things it is okay. Anyway one should use the internet cautiously. He should be constantly in touch with the latest developments in Information Technology Sector. He should keep in mind the broad guidelines so as to avoid misuse by others

The worst thing is that it has made us alone. We all are stick to computers. Families and friends are becoming less and less important. The best thing is that it has provided us with a hell lot of information about every subject. It helps in studies and in general knowledge
