What makes a human being human?

I recently responded to a discussion asking what makes a man a man and the last part of my message was that today, it is no longer a question of sexuality and what makes a man a man or a woman a woman, but what makes a human being human. i decided to solicit answers to this question myself.. yeah, what makes a human being human? any opinions, remarks, comments and reactions?

I think the biggest thing that makes us human and sets us apart from other animals is self awareness as well as empathy for other humans and their feelings. I am not sure, but I don't think other animals really have these 2 traits. When I say that something seems very human to me, it's usually because of one of these two or both of them.
