I live Ontario, Canada now and as the holidays approach I really miss my home province of Newfoundland. I left there for the main reason most Newfies do, for work. The holiday season makes me miss my extended family and all the traditions we have. Also my cousin is going to be deployed to Afganistan shortly after Christmas and I would really like to see him before he goes. If you have left Newfoundland, tell me how you deal with the homesickness. If you are still in Newfoundland, tell me some of your traditions. Do you go caroling or mummering?

Nope I am not from there but I am a fellow Canadian. I have been down east to Nova Scotia and it is really beautiful down there. I'm sure Newfoundland is the same. It is a shame about your cousin but I guess he is doing what he believes in. All you can do is pray for him and hope he is safe and comes home soon.

All I can say is once someone as been to Newfoundland they usually say there is no place like it. The people are friendly. If you didn't have money to go for dinner they would invite you in to join them. There are so many traditions that have been kept alive over the generations and new ones starting all the time. It is a place that is very much about family. My cousin truly believes in what he is doing and the entire family is praying for him.

Yes I think you'll find that with the smaller cities and towns in Canada. It's when you get into the bigger cities that people are more guarded and careful. But down there you would get that small town atmosphere and people would be extra friendly.

Fellow Newfie here, living in Vancouver.
I'm fortunate in that all of my close family (read: mother, siblings, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins) have moved to the west coast, otherwise I'd probably miss the rock a whole lot more.
As it is, I miss the place and the vibe, and hope to get back there in the next year or so to visit. I haven't been back in 11 years. o_0

Sorry..lol. I got so caught up in the excitement that I didn't answer anything..lol. I myself don't go carolling, and I believe that mummering is illegal now..haven't heard of anyone doing it recently. Just the fact that with our society today that allowing people who are completely covered into our homes isn't so safe :( It's truly a shame.
