Tragic Accident

My sister called me today and told me about a tragic accident she'd heard about watching the Montel Williams Show today. The topic of todays show had to do with household accidents and there was a couple stories that she told me about that really struck me hard. The first one was about a family who owned one of those lawn mowers that you actually sit on and ride and one day the mother was out mowing the lawn and she accidentally backed over her son and sliced his stomach in two...she rushed him to the ER and they preformed emergency surgery on the boy who had over 20 surgery's during that time and 2 years later ended up dying from the accident because he couldn't eat anymore...they had to feed him through tubes. That's very very sad...and then 2nd one really hit home because we had a similar thing happen to us... The 2nd story was about a little girl who got into the car and stuck her head out the window and accidentally placed her hand on the button to make the window go up and she literally choked herself to death. Now I had something similar happen to us with my youngest son, one day about a year ago, my son had gone into our garage and noticed our van window down about 1/4 of the way down and he thought he'd try and get into the van through the window. What ended up happening was his head got stuck on the inside and he couldn't pull his head back out so he was dangling there choking to death. Mind you no one had any idea about the van window and that he was in any trouble, he couldn't scream or yell for help. Something told me to check up on him and the first place I went was around the van and I saw my son hanging from the van only by his neck and Thank God he was ok. Things we take for granted around the house can be very dangerous for our children, I urge all parents and people who watch young kids to please keep them in site at all times, don't ignore them for phone calls and don't leave them around water at all...ever. We lost a nephew that way. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Wow, this is good information that everyone should know. I am glad that your son was okay and I am sorry about your nephew. I am pregnant with my first child now and I know I need to start childproofing my home as well as keeping an eye on him when he is mobile.

Thank you for your kind words, it is tough...kids are very active and have no ideas of the dangers that lurk around a normal house. Things that we take for granted and just assume that they know or should know not to do or go around certain things. It's not the case, we have to always assume they are in danger and keep our eyes and ears open and never let them out of our sights. They are too precious and need our help keeping them safe, not just as kids, but forever. Chris
