How many of you ladies have avoided using tampons in fear of getting toxic shock syndrome? Have you ever personally known someone who has suffered from this, apparently it is quite rare? Did you know that Toxic Shock Syndrome can also be linked to the use of contraceptive sponge and diaphragm birth control methods? Do you know of any other causes? Here are some symptoms to watch out for: -nausea and vomiting -watery diarrhea -confusion or other mental changes -decreased urination -rash (particularly a sunburn-like rash).

I've never known anyone who had it, and I've known people who accidently got tampons left in for a much longer time than is recommended. So I don't fear tampons. Pads seem to more uncleanly and just a fantastic place for bacteria and yeast to grow and they make your skin down there moist as well, contributing to the great conditions for microbes.

I knew what the symptoms were, but I never knew that the sponge or the diaphragm could cause this too. How long has this information been out?? I don't use either of them for birth control but I have friends that do and will definitely pass the info along to them. Thanks for sharing it.

Just curious... when you use tampons, does anything leak out or nothing at all... I've always been curious about this and now this is a good place to ask because most of you use these.
