The necessity of buying life insurance for oneself

Hi, would appreciate if anyone can tell me if it is necessary to buy a life insurance for ownself / family members? As you may be aware that some insurance will cost u a fortune, especially if you are low income earner. Nevertheless, insurance come into its usefulness when there is emergency case..eg. being hospitalized. In reality, is insurance really a necessity?
