I have indeed gotten room service at a hotel and I can say from the times that I have ordered that all in all the experience was 50/50. Some of the food was good and some of it was less than great. Sometimes though, the less than appealing experience had nothing to do with how the food was but how good the room service was in fact.
The hotel we have stayed at used to offer a package deal where you book a room and you get a $50 credit to use for in room dining. We used it the first couple times we stayed there before we decided to start picking up the orders ourselves instead.
For example, the first time we ever got the chance to order room service we opted to get breakfast as we already had in mind what we were going to have for supper. We woke up and placed our order to the in-house restaurant. They told us how long the meal would take to make and we eagerly awaited it to see how it turned out. When it did arrive in our room the attendant seemed very grumpy and like he was in a hurry to go back to the kitchen. So, we received our meal and sat down to enjoy our breakfast together.
Upon starting to eat the breakfast we noticed that the eggs seemed to be really rubbery and overcooked. We ordered them sunny side up and they arrived that way but the yolks were not runny at all. I like my yolks runny so I can dip my toast in it. Well, the yolks on these eggs were almost completely cooked through. The bacon seemed to be undercooked because it was not crispy at all, it was more flexible and more greasy than expected. The toast was burnt and I didn't even end up eating it because of that. Lastly the hash browns they sent along with the order weren't seasoned enough and they were really greasy.
After that instance, we decided not to order breakfast from them. Upon staying with this same hotel a second time we ordered lunch instead of breakfast. My other half ordered some chicken sandwich that came on toast that was marbled and ended up really overdone. The toast was almost black and the chicken was dry and chewy.
I ordered a southwest chicken wrap that they had on the menu and it was alright but the chicken was just the same as my other half's, really dry and tough. We really thought we were done with ordering room service until the most recent time we stayed at this hotel.
We just got back from our Valentine's Day stay at the same hotel and because of a front desk mix up we ended up with a couple coupons for a free breakfast the following morning. We ordered a couple meals off the menu and decided to pick it up from the restaurant this time because the attendants in previous times had made us feel uncomfortable.
Well, my other half went and picked up breakfast from the restaurant and brought it back up to our room. It almost seemed like they got a new bunch of cooks because to compare what we had this time to previous meals would be like comparing night to day. The eggs I had ordered were exactly how I like them and the bacon was crispy and not undercooked at all. My other half's meal was cooked really well and in the end we really enjoyed our breakfast this one time.
So, in conclusion, when we have stayed at a hotel we have gotten room service. Because of certain employees of the hotel making us feel uncomfortable we got to the point where we would rather go pick up our food than to have someone bring it to us. We've had our share of good and bad meals from room service as well and in the end will most likely next time not order from them unless we know exactly what we want. I also find room service to be way to expensive. The only reason I have found that we have ordered it is because of the coupons. Otherwise we wouldn't have ordered room service at all. There prices can be outrageous! . .
Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

thanks for the outstanding response...interesting how your experiences were mixed...it seems picking up the food yourself was the most satisfying...i will have to try room service on our next vacation, just to see what the experience is like...have a great day...

It is always expensive to stay in star hotels. Room service will have service tax, luxury tax, sales tax etc.
