you are absolutely right... VLSI is the enabling technology for all the innovations you are seeing arond you.. being a VLSI designer myself.. know the challenges towards the VLSI design.. it is not only computers, the mobile phones you see, new technologies you are seeing, RFID chips, Faster Microprocessors, better GAMES, thin IPODS are all result of the VLSI industry.. the VLSI industry is the enabling tech force behind all the cool things you see around.
And to get a chip out to any of us users it costs nearly billions of dollars for the companies... it is a great job and I simply love the VLSI field for the challenges which it poses in front of us.. and the way we designers try and overcome it.. I hope this piece of information was useful for you as well..
And one more thing.. VLSI presently should be better called ULSI as now a chip cases not thousands of transistors but millions of transistors.
That is the beauty of the Chip Designing.
