The flag of the Philippines has two equal horizontal bands - blue on top and red at the bottom, a white equilateral triangle, which has a sun with eight rays at the center and a star at each corner. During war time, the red band is on top while the blue band is at the bottom. The blue color stands for unity and justice, the red for courage and bravery, the white for peace and purity. The equilateral triangle stands for equality among men. The three stars represent the three island groups of the Philippines - Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao. The sun represents the dawning of a new era of self determination. The eight rays of the sun denote the first eight provinces which revolted against the Spanish rule.
