When do kids really learn how to spell?

My son does very well in school but he can't spell that great. When he does his hw, he writes answers but spells words wrong. He is in 4th grade. When do they actually start learning to spell without lots of mistakes. He does get all A's on his spelling test. The words he does spell wrong aren't completely wrong but there is always one or two letters off. I know boys aren't great spellers to begin with.

All kids are different. They get better and better each year they are in school. It takes practice and a LOT of it. By the time they are in high school they can spell 85 percent of the words used by that age group. boys usually struggle more than girls. Some never learn to spell. It takes patience and time.

My son does well in spelling, but his handwriting is just atrocious. I have tried to talk to him about it, but he just gets angry.

That's a question that doesn't really have an answer! lol I know some adults that are still terrible spellers! I just recently met someone who was in their 30's and couldn't spell "because" ! How bad is that???
Best thing I can suggest is encourage your son to read books and possibly get a penpal! If he is constantly using his reading/writing skills then his spelling will improve...
