Why are both of Spongebob's parents round like sea sponges?

Well you see its just like real life, we all start off a little square but eventually we become well rounded. Art imitates life, or was it the other way around, intereting though

That's a deep though, and although I agree with it... I doubt that's what the creators of the cartoon were thinking of when they created the characters.

Because it's a cartoon for children and not based on any reality principals. You could just as equally ask "How could a sea sponge and a starfish talk?"
