Anyone else have amblyopia (aka "lazy eye")? Tips for survival?

I've noticed that over time, my good eye kind of seems to be getting "worn out". Because it is the only eye I've used. I've tried everything short of surgery to make the lazy eye work, but it's basically shut off now all the time. It will see colors and shapes and basic things when I shut the good eye, but it's too useless to do anything with it pretty much.
How do you keep your good eye from needing glasses? I don't want to need to wear glasses. But I think that because I'm only using one eye, it's getting rather tired. When I'm studying, it gets bloodshot, while the other eye always looks fine.
Do you notice that you've found ways to cope with depth perception? I sure have, but I can't really explain them unfortunately. It's very hard to explain. I go by sound a lot, because I can usually get around with my eyes closed as well. But I do bump into things still occasionally (although, I've heard that's also a problem related to dyslexia).
I've tried patch treatment, special glasses, eye exercises, etc. Nothing helped. I know someone who had surgery as a child, and coupled with the eye exercises and everything else, she seems to be doing rather well.
Just wondering what others experiences are. As a child because I couldn't tell when things like balls were coming, I wasn't even able to do regular PE. It took me until I was 20 to be able to drive. And like I said, I still notice my good eye getting tired pretty easily. I'd love to hear from others and see what you've done to take control.

I was like 3 or 4. Then I had to do it again in high school. I had to also take some medication to help with the headaches it caused.
