Do celebs do good just for publicity's sake?

I've noticed that every time an actor/actress/singer/star does any charity or help or adopts a baby or donates there's usually a lot of hype about it in the media. It makes me wonder whether the purpose of the deed is just for publicity mainly.
I dont wanna name any one in particular, but sometimes this is sickeningly obvious while at times it's quite subtle. Of course its not always the case and a lot of times it is out of concern and love.
What are your thoughts?

true -- something I didn't think about was the type of celebrity -- my first reaction was Hollywood celebrities -- and my experience with them is that they will do just about anything to promote themselves. however you also have celebrity athletes, politicians, business men (Bill Gates and the like).
Thanks for the thoughtful topic.

I think if they really want to help others without wanting the media to broadcast it, they can do it very discreetly, that is if they really want to. But since they want the buzz and the admiration of everyone, thus they opted for a more "open" gesture of charity

yes, that's right most of the time they do it just for publicity and of course there are some who does charity and does not get media attention at all and does it silently, they are the real heroes. There are lots of real life heroes like mother theresa who does a lot to the society and still don't come to the attention of the media, they are the real heroes and celebs according to me rather than those who always Call the media first and go to charity and donate some money for the sake of publicity only.

I agree that some celebs do a charity work just for publicity. But in fairness to other actors, they are doing it sincerely and not out of anything else but for righteousness and kindness. We cannot do away the fact that it is not only the celebs who do it for publicity, there are the politicians and the rich people who want to be noticed by the public.

The adoptions some really takes good care of their children themselves so you know that they did it out of love. but the donation on charities some does it for tax rebates...

I think some do it just for the media purposes and the public eye will say just that. Then some do things "uncelebrated" as to not brag or be known of there good acts. Where I live, we have a private zoo for retired circus animals. It is not open to the public-no one can go in besides the workers. It is fully funded by Kim Basinger. That is a good deed that I am sure very few people are aware of and that is the way she likes it.

Celebs will do anything for publicity. It does not matter what it is. I personally get sick of hearing about them and what they do. I want to hear some real news and hear about real people. Not reality television, not celeb reality television, not the magazines, I want to hear about people in other countires helping each other out or fighting back against oppression. Some real news.

There are some celebraties that do charity work just to get better publicity. They want to look good, after all, image is a large part of their business. They have to keep up with the Jones so to speak. However, there are those who really care and use publicity to get more exposure to their cause and get more people involved in charity work. It is hard to say what is in someone else's heart, but if someone benefits from their effort, maybe its all good. I'm not saying people should be fake, but there are lots of people in need and lots of kind hearted people (regardless of being a celebraty or not).

Some may get into a charity or other charitable action and the publicity is a bonus of sorts for both the celebrity and for the charity.
Famous people announcing their problems with addiction have opened people's eyes not to the celebrity's problem but to there being a problem overall...that such people seek help has encouraged others seek help.
The adoptions that get so much attention may encourage others to adopt either within their own country or abroad.
While some may have ulterior motives, I think for the most part they believe that lending their name and efforts to a cause can bring that cause more attention and aid.

I think that it is hard to tell anyone's true motive if you don't know them personally. I think often their activities do bring attention to causes that people overlook, and for that, regardless of how people are brought to thought, I am grateful.

I often have to question the legitimacy of why they are doing what they are doing as well. I have to wonder if they would still be helping charities and what not if they weren't celebritys. Which brings me to the thought that maybe they are doing this because they are made to feel guilty for not doing anything and having so much money.
I don't know. I think everyone has their reasons I guess. Some celebritys are genuine, some probably feel guilty, some may even do it for the tax break.

Celebrities are human beings too, and just as there are non-celebrities who do "good works" just for show, to promote an idealised image of themselves, and gain kudos amongst their peers (not for the sake of doing good), there are celebrities who do the same. It's just that you tend to hear all about everything celebrities do, because the media sell a lot of papers, magazines and TV programmes that way. There are celebs and non-celebs who do good just for the sake of doing good too - you can't tell a person's motivation just by the act alone, unless you know them well.

not at all i think, i believe some of them do it because they want to help another. You can say, Oprah Winfrey. I think she doesnt need any publicity anymore, right?

Celebrity do not act based on their feelings.
They do not know the work they do.
They do not do a work based on what they have studied in school or college.
They are not applying any knowledge they have studied from any books or from their husband(Guru).
If the above facts are true, from where the term "love" came.
If any celeb. is applying his/her awareness, knowledge from Teachers/Guru from lesons they have learnt in collages, then they do it out of love.
thanks

I think this is partial true. Partial because they are doing some good work because getting money thats why they do it. Sometimes they do it themselves. But in both ways there is publicity involved as they are the stars after all.
