My son started taking Concerta in August of 2006. We thought this medication was helping his severe ADHD. However the school he was attending was not being honest about his behaviors at school. He was being extremely aggressive. He was displaying dangerous emotional reactions to situations. Then one day I got a call from the police. The principal had called the police on my 7 year old son. My reactions were very separated. How did it get this bad? I had no idea that he had become this aggressive. At home he was hyper and a little confused at time, but not that aggressive. This particular day he had made threats against others and himself. Well come to find out one of the side effects of this medicine can be suicidal thoughts and violent behaviors. I stood in awe that a medication could do this to a child. My advice investigate any medication a Dr. recommends for your child.

I wonder why the school wouldn't have notified you when his behavior first became questionable. This is really unfortunate and it's too bad that it had to get to the point of getting the police involved..Sometimes it's hard to know if medications will really benefit us or not. For example, I was put on Zoloft for depression and anxiety..yet a side affect is "feeling anxious"...kinda weird.

well i had my son on ritalin when he was little. he developed ticks. it was very tramatic for me as we took him off the meds and he still had them for awhile. then we put him on aderall, then dexedrine. well when he would get home from school he was miserable. angry, cranky. last year i took him off of meds and he has grown about 2 inches and gained about 80 lbs. he has always weight 80 lbs, now 170. he has developed stretch marks. it is awful. i am glad i took him off meds. not glad about the weight gain. he is still hyper but slower growing better as he is almost 15. i now don't believe in meds, sad to say. it is a very trying period in our lives and the meds are only to help the teachers. what about the parents??? : )

This is to Kongfustue. What about the parent. Who are you and what planet are you from? I fight for my son in every way possible. DRs, of all sorts. I have missed so much work that i am behind in rent and other things as well. So as for the parent i am fighting people like you to save my child and his future. I am sorry that you do not have the grace to understand nor the gift of what parents of ADHD and mentaly disabled children go through to try and give them a future.

Most medications that have to do with mood, brain activity etc are used because they are viewed as effective. All too often these medications were designed for other things, such as seizure disorder, with little or no research to back up the other claims they make for these medications.
The pharmacutical companies encourage doctors to prescribe these medications for various conditions other than the ones they were intended for, this results in a 'field study' often without the consent or knowledge of the participants. Saving the pharmacuticals millions in research and 'controlled studies'.
Always independently research any medicatin prescribed yourself or your family. Note the side effects and other possible reactions and watch for possible signs of a reaction.
Investigate your options, often there are homeopathic remedies that work just as well or better than the pharmacuticals available.
"Let the buyer beware." is more apt today than ever before.

My child also was on ADHD medication when she was in elementary school. There were a few different ones that the dr. perscribed but in all honesty I don't belive that meds were the right choice for my child. At first we did everything the doc told us to do and gave her the meds he told us to give her because he was her doc and we trusted him. We soon figured out that the meds were not right for her. She was hyper, but she was a kid too. She had a hard time staying focused in school but we solved that problem too just by talking with her. ADHD is so widely and wrongly diagnosed. Parents really need to be aware before starting their kids on meds. The school was wrong in not contacting you right away when your son started having problems and I would say something about that to the school board if I were you. Good luck to you!

My husband takes concerta and although I don't see any aggressive behavior I do see the potential for some. He does have MAJOR mood swings though that can go from an extreme high to a low. I never know whats going to come next. I will let him know of this thread and see if changing meds are an option. Thanks for the info!

I have 2 children with ADHD. My son was diagnosed at the age of 5 when the child hadn't yet slept through the night. He was put on Concerta after adderall and ritalin seemed to cause too many peeks and valleys, that way he had a long lasting dose. After about 2 years on it we decided to try Strattera (my son was having visual hallucinations like seeing his whole tv move and the windows rippling), I liked it because it was a non-stimulate. He is now 14 and we are trying him off all meds. It has been 3 months now and he is doing good.
I also have a special needs daughter (she has brain damage), because of her behaviors the doctor we took her to diagnosed her with ADHD at the age of 2 1/2. Put her on all kinds of meds, nothing worked, she would either be a zombie or act the same. (At this time we did not know she had brain damage)Concerta is recommended for children 6 and over, well for some unknown reasont o me the doctor said she would be fine and started her on it at the age of 4 1/2. Looking back now I wish I would have listened to my gut and said forget it. My daughter was kicked out of 2 different daycare centers for biting (actually drawing blood)and for abusing other children physically. We moved to another state when she was 6, by the time she was 7 we had a great doctor and said she didn't need all that. She was put on Risperdial which helps control aggression and gives her impulse control. It seems to me at the time the doctor didn't want to take the time to truely find out what was wrong with my child and just threw her on meds to shut me up, which is not what I was looking for at all.

I think it was wrong of the school to lie to you about his behaviour, and wrong of them to call the police. Did they really think they would be in so much danger from a 7 year old?
Children with ADHD need firm role models who give specific directions and apply consistent discipline when rules are broken. Can it be difficult and stressful? Yes. But the teachers should be doing this. I am sorry for your situation and hope it improves.

This is an old thread but I felt compelled to reply. If your child has Bipolar disorder, which CAN manifest in young people, then being on any sort of stimulant is going to cause the child to go into a manic phase unless they are on a mood stabilizer. My guess is your child does not have ADD/ADHD but has a mood disorder instead that would need to get checked out.

Wow, I can't say that I am terribly suprised by this, meds are sometimes dangerous to us, and it's not helping us like it's suppose to, I myself don't react to well to meds, that poor child of yours, I hope you've taken him off those meds. I will not give my kids anything other than antibiotics and even those I look into before I start them.

For some reasons those meds affect me the same way. Strattera and wellbutrin both made me very angry. I'm sure the side effects are even worse with a child. Try to find a doctor that does alternative treatments for ADHD. Karate, meditation, and eye exercises both have been knows to help ADHD.

Are you sure that only after taking that medicine, your son started to behave hyper? If so immediately consult your doctor so that any alternative midicine can be introduced to him, that may not have any side effect like this.
