I only respond to discussions if I think I can offer good advice or if it's a topic I want to share my views or opinion on.
I never answer, "I don't know". I do get replies like, "I don't understand" or "don't know" and it's extremely annoying! I feel like saying, "Then why bother?" and I have commented with, "Thanks for nothing!".
I take that back. I did see a discussion about myLot homepage/browser once and was curious of the answer, and I posted a response so I could periodically check back for the answer... which never came, by the way! LOL : )

I think we are here to discuss on something and should join the discussions where we have an idea on what to talk about. I usually answer the topics properly as i can and dont give answers such as "i dont know" anyway, why bother if you dont know then, better look for discussions that you'll understand it.

I don't respond to someone's discussion if I cannot understand the meaning of their topics or so.
If the discussion was about their life issue and
the person is seeking for an advice or so,I would try to
think the best to give him/her as my opinion even though
I haven't really experienced.
I just don't really want to give people a wrong message :)
