How many of you have visited Africa? I have always wanted to go, but have been told bad stories that have scared me from going. What was your experience there? Please share!

I live in Africa,in west side (my country is Niger ,not Nigeria:it's always a confusion).
It depend on which kind of people told you about Africa and which side of Africa they have told you about they are some nice places to visit. In my area, all is good the country is peaceful, the best you could learn from my country is not on media, just try volunteer (peace corp) that visit and serve in my country some are from US universities (Boston,Washington,Texas...)

I almost went to Africa as a volunteer to provide HIV and AIDS care with a local University Group in my city, but I couldn't get the time off from my job.
I plan to do this when I retire (I'm planning on retiring YOUNG). I would love to see this part of the world, get to know the people and their customs and culture, and help out those in the world who are most devastated by HIV and AIDS and who have such limited access to care and knowledgeable specialists. I think this would be an opportunity of a lifetime and would be extremely satisfying to me.
