Modern Society less Savage than the Past?!

It seems that society can never banish cruelty, everyday we could hear and see reports of unspeakable cruelty, amother putting her infant in an oven, a friend shot a friend, shootouts killing innocent people, the list goes on.. Savagery were often used to describe uncivilized society of our ancestors and it's often connected to cruelty- the basis of how civilized society is. But as I see it, WE, civilized individuals were no better than our savage ancestors, if not worse. Cruelty has changed its form but the pain remains the same. What do you think of modern cruelty?
