Why do janitors get paid minimum wage?

I live in the state of Texas and there was a big strike recently of janitors to obtain health benefits and a pay raise. Why should people who do one of the most disgusting jobs have to fight for health benefits and get paid at a rate that could not support a single person with no kids. Can I receive your input on this?
