I have not studies a language for quite a while, but I did, we used headphones. We could hear the english word and then the translation. We would have the book in front of us with the spelling of the foreign word. It worked quite well and we all enjoyed that class. All the best.

Thanks. I have similar experience. When i am listening to English, I will try to write down what I have listened quickly. I improved a lot by doing this, especially in my listening ability.

It is a help if you know phonetics and the to get a language tutor who you can just listen to and write down phonetically what you hear so you can say it back the same way. Depends what language but with tonal languages it is helpfull to learn it phonetically.

My mother language is Indonesian language.
I learned English (5 years), Chinese (7.5 years), Hokkianese (my family speaks it), Japanese (since 10 years old), Spanish (since college time) and Korean (since 3 years ago).
I hired an English teacher to teach me English, a Chinese teacher to teach me Chinese, learn Hokkianese from my family, learn Japanese from a Japanese teacher and Japanese friend, CD-ROM for Spanish and Internet textbooks for Korean.
Now, I can teach English and Chinese already.
