Does anyone has a remedy for hives (a type of skin problem)?

My 6-year-old nephew started to have hives this year. Whenever they 'attack', he'll feel itchiness on some parts of his body. They are like clusters of insect bites, pink and swollen. After some time, they'll disappear totally. Doctor's remedy is to take Zyrtec oral medication continuosly for 3 years. Anyone has experience on this? Any better suggestions or remedies please?
