Ram Question... ???

One of my friend's pc just got screwed...it was ram problem,he was using 2 gb ram (1gb each)...n one of his ram got busted...now he's on only 1 gb
my question is that can he use a different companys ram ro replace 1 gb or he has to use both ram of same company ie 2 gb of same company??
