Is shaving cream used to soften your skin, or used as a marker in case you lose your place?

I think shaving cream is used as a prevention for shaving rash and cutting yourself. I think they design it so it has many purposes, including using it as a means of seeing where you have and havent shaved. I also think it contains properties that soften and soothe your skin, and make it easier to shave. Whats your opinion?

Well I shave my entire body and I've found that certain shaving creams actually help your skin feel smoother, however, if you run out or just don't use it, there's always lotion after you get out of the shower.
