The * symbol is actually called an asterisk. (Pronounced: as-ter-risk) It's a function that allows you to give your telephone an extra command. Here's an example: Somebody calls you and you want to know the number that called, or you want to call them right back. With my phone company, maybe not yours, I would hang up, get my dial tone back and dial *69. Then it would dial that person right back, and with the caller information that shows up on my phone, I would then know the number who called, and possibly the name (unless they had that feature blocked.) There's lots of uses for the * symbol, lots of times they tell you in the front pages of your telephone book what * and particular number you have to dial to bring up different features for use with your phone. (In my area, if I *69, I get charged for it every time!)
