Why do people respond to posts when they really have nothing to add?

I notice that many people seem to respond to posts yet have nothing of value to add or say. Why answer if you don't have anything to add to a discussion?

But sometimes all the person posts is "I don't know." If you don't know, then don't answer.

I think the answer should be pretty obvious, they're doing it for the 2 cents. Unfortunately it's a system that encourages quantity over quality.
I admit I often find it hard to think of what to say in response to a lot of topics, especially the ones that generate a ton of replies.

It's pretty sad that someone would post something worthless just for 2 cents.
