Constantly defending the right to talk about Christmas...

I searched for Christmas discussions to be able to talk about something cheery, and they're all full of non-believers knocking Christians. Why can't these people just stay out of discussions about Christmas like I do with discussions that aren't relevant to me? So the Christmas discussions I was hoping to enjoy were ruined for me. Thanks people!

I have never understood the desire to mock or attack someone else's religion.
Personally, I am an atheist and do not follow any religious code or rules, but I have enough respect for others not to want to offend them by criticising something that is deeply important to them.
I fully agree with you that if a person has hostile feelings against a specific religion then they should either start a thread of their own to that effect or leave the subject alone, they should certainly not invade someone else's world and disrupt an otherwise enjoyable discussion.
As I mentioned earlier I do not believe in any divine teachings, but I do believe in a person's right to believe and take comfort and solace from it.
Merry Christmas to you sbeauty, and to all other members.

well now all of you are talking about why people should not knock christianity instead of talking about christmas in general. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

CHRISTmas is meant to be a CHRISTian holiday. Obviously many religions all over the world celebrate it in different ways. It is ok to have santa in the picture but always remember the CHRIST in CHRISTmas. My kid (I have 5) believed in santa but every CHRISTmas morning we read the CHRISTmas story from the Bible so they knew why we celebrated this glorious holiday. It is a definitely religious holiday.

You poor thing. Don't give up hope I love Christmas. I have to deal with HUmbugs all the time too. I guess you just can't let it get to you. I'm not gonna let them ruin it for me.

I am not a religious person per se, but seriously, who knocks Christmas? I say spread the joy about any holiday-any day for that matter-and ignore the grumpy, grouchy people. There's enough anger and angst in the world today, you'd think that people would jump at the chance for a "time-out". Anyway, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Chanuka, Happy New Year...and enjoy anything else I have missed :)

I find myself agreeing with Weasel more and more each post she makes. Each person should be able to celebrate his/her own holiday in a manner he/she sees fitting without interfering in other's religions and celebrations. Merry Christmas to the Christians, Happy Chanuka to the Jews, Blessed Yule to the Wiccans, and Happy Holidays to the other folks who are celebrating this time of year and I don't know the name of the holidays (sorry, my knowledge of world religions only goes so far).
I wish there was a way to say "enjoy your religion and your religious specific holidays" without offending people.

There seems to be a strong Anti-Christian sentiment throughout Mylot in general. I firmly believe this to be a sign of the times. The world has become a completely morally corrupt place. I'd tend to believe also that these same people who are knocking Christians are also the same people who are saying that they dislike Christianity because of how intolerant it is...kinda funny that they preach tolerance while being intolerant themselves.
But it does sem kinda odd, this season around the world is celebrated by many different religions as a different thing, but yet the most prominent celebration during this time is still Christmas. Simply because Christianity is still the majority in the world.

Shoreboy, If you're talking about the thread that we were both on, the problem the atheist/agnostic responders had with you was not your Christianity, but your view that homosexuality was wrong. This is a view that can be held by anyone regarless of relgious background.
Lots of people are Christian without being anti-gay. It's a reglion based around a man who encouraged equality and acceptance.
As other non-religious people have said, most of us non-Christians have no problem with Christians or Christmas celebrations taking place at this time of year. Many of us in North America have friends and family who are Christian, so will be taking part in such celebrations ourselves.

Well, since this is not the proper place to discuss the gay issue I won't go into detail, but I know what the Bible says and choose to follow that Bible as the word of God. If that makes the Christain faith intolerant, than so be it, it's intolerant. The problem with tolerance is that it tolerates lots of things that the Bible says is corrupt. Christians do not hate the sinner, they do however hate the sin. If people want to be gay, that's fine with me. It's their choice, they do however deserve to know how the Creator, and final judge of this world feels about it.

I don't like the commercialization, either. I have a little china cup that was my great grandmother's only Christmas present when she was 5 in 1878. When I compare it with the stacks of presents my grandkids get from all of their relatives -- so many that they often don't want to open them all -- I can really see how Christmas has changed for the worse. The media and merchants hype the holiday season up so much in order to sell more that I doubt we could ever get back to the way it was when Grandma Jessie was a girl who was happy with 1 china cup.

Well boohoo! If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
It's a matter of free speech, and that endorses the right to offend.
If others are "ruining" your day/ discussions, it's likely due to a weakness in your own stamina. Your buttons are too easy to mash.
Think about it.

Definitely keep speaking out about Christmas. First and foremost a celebration of Jesus Christ, we must not let the 'politically correct' crowd silence us. In addition, many, many families value their Christams traditions. I say put a Nativity on public property every chance you get.

I agree. After all, by their own definition, what does "Politically-anything" have to do with Christianity? They want to keep politics and religion separate, then they need to keep quiet from their end and not join in our discussions. Thanks for your response.

There seems to be an awful lot that don't believe in Christmas and Christians. I just can't believe the amount. They don't need to knock us, for we do not get on here and knock how they feel and what they believe. Merry Christmas to you!!

Thats they way it has been going for all of these. I celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas, for each side of my family, and I decided to start a Chanukah one, and a guy just came in, bashing Jews, calling all jews liers, and just acting like a jerk. I know what you meen though. But, I wish you a Merry Christmas, and Hope that this stops, and you can enjoy those discussions again. Thats why I give negative ratings to those people who go around just bashing religions when they shouldnt even be replying to it. Have a good rest of the day.

The thing is you do not have to celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus to celebrate. It is just like people trying to talk about what they enjoy about Christmas & people trying to shove religious thoughts down their throat. Everyone has the right to celebrate in their way

I am agnostic buy my family are all christians (and do not know I am agnostic). I still enjoy celebrating christmas just because it is a good way to spend time with them and it makes them happy. This year will be different though because my parents have got divorced and my mum got breat cancer and is having chemo therapy. So its not that merry really! we will try our best.

i know what you mean...but i just cant do anything except to close one eye and moved on. it's really useless to go in and bash them back as it's going to be a never ending debate. it's sad when this happen. but dont worry, christmas is inside all of us. if we really have faith in Him, what people says will not affect us, right? Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

You are always so wise for someone so young! My husband and I are in a very non-Christian family who celebrate Christmas for Santa and presents rather than for Christ. We are very discouraged that even though we raised our children in the church, and they were both baptized in their early teens, neither one of them have stayed with it now that they're out on their own. I had hoped my daughter would get back to church when she had children, but she has no interest. It all makes me feel very sad!

I love Christmas! I am just very disappointed in my self. We moved two years ago and I seem to have forgotten my box of ornaments in my storage space. They were all my special ornaments from when I was little and the ones I got when I was teaching preschool.
My sister-in-law bought me a tiny tree so I don't need ornaments. I plan to slowly get some ornaments and then get a big tree next year.
Merry Christmas to you and yours sbeauty!

I just did a quick search on the word Christmas and I see tons of people talking about it. So I don't know what you are complaining about.
