well, the dentist said it was more like a baby root canal. we took my son to the dentist yesterday and they told me he has 2 cavities and nerve damage to 2 of his front teeth because of him grinding his teeth. no one ever told me grinding his teeth would cause nerve damage, the last denstist said i had nothing to worry about because i was conserned about it. now my son needs to have those little dental opperations...i'm so scared for him. i don't know how he can go through it without fussing around. he's never even had a cleaning done yet because they keep saying he's too young. i keep thinking its my fault...i feel so guilty, maybe if brushed his teeth myself and forced him to stop grinding his teeth at night all those could have been prevented. has anyone else gone through this or something similar??? i don't know how to handle it! he's just so young...any advice??

teeth - baby teeth
When my daughter had to take her daughter to have any work done the dentist would put her to sleep because she fought him so. It's something to think about. as for the tooth grinding the first dentist should have fir him for a mouth guard that would prevent him from damaging his teeth.

thanks...they actually told me they're just going to gas him...but not to sleep. and she told me they don't give mouth guards to children his age because it normally doesn't work because they spit it out and it may cause more damage because it pushes down on the other teeth. now i used to grind my teeth while sleeping as a child...i still do now and i never had any problem....its just scary...

Just a little update for everyone. It was in december when my son saw the dentist. i've been waiting for them to call me back every since because they said it would take a while. (4 weeks, i know i waited longer). my son never says anything about his teeth hurting, so i'd just let it go and wait. well, last night i was brushing his teeth and noticed some blood. i looked and the tooth in his front where the dentist said he was grinding away the enamel was bleeding in back!! i guess it finaly broke through. well, i called them again this morning and they said they still needed to contact the insurance and i'll get a call back on MONDAY!!! OMG!!! i'm not sure whats going on! i just lose my mind about thought that my son will be hurt. i'm definatly getting his daddy to handle these things from now on because i emotionally can't think right anymore! wish my son luck and hopfully he won't get his teeth pulled again. thats what i'm mostly worried about since it now has broken through to show the vain (i guess thats what it is). He's going to be 5 next month and i'm so scared of this operation! =::(

oh dear that sounds nasty I would hate to think what it must be like for you I have a four year old son and I would be the same as you are about it too... My son grinds his teeth a little sometimes I hear it through the night but they have not grinded that bad to have hurt the teeth... Have you seen a Doctor about the theeth grinding? They might be able to help.

thanks. i grind my teeth at night as well. i guess he got it from me. normally its nothing to worry about becuase it doesn't cause much damage, but because he was already missing 3 teeth in front, they put more pressure on the surounding ones, i guess. when he first lost his teeth i asked the dentist if this could cause a problem and he said no. and his current desntist, i asked her if there was anything i can do to prevent him from grinding his teeth, and its a no. the only thing they have is a mouth guard and most of the time they don't give them to children because they tend to spit it out eventually. its only used on teens and adults.

Four does seem so young to be getting a root canal..have you tried getting a second or even third opinion?? Sometimes it doesn't hurt to do that! I wish you luck and just remember that a root canal is a very minor procedure...it could be a lot worse. I do feel for you though..good luck.

i have no idea regarding w/ that maam:) because when i was i kid as i remember, since until now i don't have a problem to my teeth. and his to young i think, but it's ok also to give him an operation now than you wait him untill he is the right age so it's to hard.

Um... I seriously think you should get some second professional opinions. Root canals are not cheap... I am going through one right now and this is very unlikely your son, being 4 years old REALLY needs one. I would look more into this.

When my son was 4 years old he went to the hospital and was put out to get his teeth worked on.He would not hold still in the doctors office. Every thing turned out just fine. But i did here about root canals on small children. the dentists wont to try to save your teeth,so they dont have to pull them
