There is more to it than simply removing a virus or spyware. Windows based systems can become slower after a period of time due to the vast amount of unwanted and unused data stored on the drive. A reformat can make a very noticeable difference to the overall performance of your computer.

Many of us have anti virus software, anti spyware apps, etc. The problem is the computer sometimes gets sluggish and slow as sin. That can be frustrating to power users who notice such things. I know I do.

I would prefer to never format it. I hate backing up and reinstalling everything. I had a pc I hadn't formatted for 3 years, but finally had to a few months ago.

I do a FDISK on Drive C and reinstall Windows every 6 months or so. Since I have multiple hard drives, its not like I am losing anything vital. I just use C for the OS and installing programs.

I used to format even more regularly than you do, although I have changed to using a complete backup which I can overwrite the hard drive with. I now tend to recover the system about every 3 or 4 months, but I have the whole configuration set up so I can be up and running fully in about one and a half hours.

NO, I dont unless it is absolutely necessary. I am very picky about sites i visit and stuff i download. I dont keep junk on my computer. I keep my antivirus updated and stay away from spammers and adwares.

I dont format my hard drive unless it is absolutly necessary. as it is a lot of work to restore everything after the format. unless you have a restore CD for it, but why unless you corrupt your hard drive every 6 months that is rediculas. and un-necessary.

It depends what do you with your computer and it's condition. Usually i only format my computer when i having problem with it or it running really slow. If it doesnt have any major problem and it runs alright, i wont consider to do any format.. since it is painful to reinstall all the programs, and many other things you got on your computer. It could take weeks to get it back to the original state
