why do some husbands think that their wives life revolves around them?

I have this friend whos husband controls everything that she does. She is a stay home mom of 3. All under 2, and the youngest being 1 month. She has to have the house spotless before he gets home from work everyday or she gets in trouble. he isnt physically abusive, but I believe he may be mentally abusive. Now i have never seen anything, i think because of how she talks about him like he's god or something. She came to my house one day to pick up some baby clothes, wasnt even here for 5 minutes when he called. She got in trouble because the kitchen wasnt swept. He was at work, she sat on my couch and bawled on the phone with him while he told her that she was worthless. We went to walmart, one night was gone maybe an hour, she got in trouble. She went to the dr and had to take the youngest because he couldnt handle all three of them, then got in trouble because it took to long. I was at there house tonight and invited her to go for a girls night out one weekend. Drinks were gonna be on the house ( I know the owner of the bar) we were gonna need a designated driver. My fiance has a designated time to pick me up. He told her that he wouldnt come and get her because if she chose to go and drink she had to walk home. I spoke up for her and asked him if he thought it was alright if she let someone who maybe had a few to bring her home. He said no she had to walk. And then i asked him if " he just didnt want his wife to have a night out with the girls by herself" he never answered me and a few minutes later he motioned to her to have tell us to leave. He couldnt even be a man and tell us himself. She doesnt have any friends because he doesnt like anyone that she has made friends with. She isnt even allowed to talk to her own family because he doesnt like them. Her own mother has never even met her grandchildren. Why is that some men think that they have to be like this? Why are some men jerks? there is absolutly no way that I would put up with ANYTHING that he does to her. What about you guys?
