I also disagree as unfortunate as it is I also live in england and am very impressed with torchwood and it's effects, bearing in mind that different countries own tv networks spend there money on entirely a load of crap like endless reality shows and stuff, with torchwood the writing is top notch and the effects are great also, it's just we can't afford to spend that much on effects on our shows as the bbc is a greedy firm and we have to pay tv licenses that give the management at the bbc a christmas party to remember. Plus americans have a long standing reputation of puring money into programs even if they are past their sell by date and the ratings go down and the shows are cancelled, they still haul out the next thing to be cancelled or something that does not conclude story plots and relays no coherent answers for the viewer. Anyway my point of view is entirely my own and should not be believed as truth because I'm not really from this dimension!

I think the effects and costumes/make-up are wonderful in Torchwood and Dr Who are amazing. The faeries in a recent Torchwood were brilliant, to borrow Dr Who's favorite saying. The Cybermen, Daleks, etc. are also interesting. They are just different than the effects on US TV. Different doesn't always mean better.

I have to disagree. I actually like several british shows such as Dr Who, Torchwood, and the unfortunate Hex (too bad it was cancelled.)

I think the effects in Torchwood are just fine, as are they in the new Doctor Who series. Heck, I even liked the effects in the old Doctor Who series! But I must have a thing for cardboard. ;) I think UK shows are doing just fine in terms of special effects. What exactly are you finding wrong with them? ~Wyrdsister

I think that British shows are often very good, much better than some US shows. They're different though, as they don't have as much money! I think sometimes the US shows are just made to fast and aim for quantity not quality - whereas British shows aren't as numerous, but they are usually very good! I think as well in UK shows, like dr who and torchwood, but also in general, there's more of a focus on the characters, actors and story, whereas some US shows just seem to throw a lot of action and special effects in, without making the characters as involving. Of course there are exceptions to both sides, but that's what i find on average.

i have to disagree along with the others. Dr. Who and Torchwood are in my top 5 favorite tv shows! i just watch them and love them for special effects (with are fantastic in my opinion) but i truly enjoy and care for the characters themselves. the storylines get you involved and worried, happy, excited right along with the characters in the show. like someone above mentioned..here in the US there is a majority of 2 types. either crime drama or reality shows. now some are definatly better than others in each genre, but there are just so many of them that you get bored and/or sick of seeming the same basic plot again and again. at least with shows like Dr. Who and Torchwood, they are stretching our imagination for the sake of entertainment..not showing us the crappy personalities that are able to get on tv because they are pretty OR bumm us out by showing us some of the horrors that plague reality.

I disagree. I love Torchwood, and I really enjoy Black Books. Also Mighty Boosh is hilarious. In fact I would say that I find a majority of US shows less stimulating than the UK shows I watch. Admittedly I do love several US shows too, but compared to the CSI series, or some of the other five million CSI type shows the UK shows are fresh and awesome.
