New space elevator?

There are rumors going around, that scientists are creating an elevator that will go up on some waves transmitted through satelites or something, and reach the moon. Anyone believe in this? It was in my local newspaper, and I sort of do - but I dont really want to belive in it, it seems too sci-fi.
