What does JAVA stand for?

"Java" is just a name that Sun gave to their programming language, Runtime Environment, and all the bits and pieces associate with it. Java is NOT an acronym = it does NOT stand for "Just Another ....." or anything like that. A story I've heard, not that I've been able to confirm it but, the Java developers were trying to think of a different name from the original 'Oak', which was already taken by another department as the name for their project.They were sitting aroud drinking coffee, hence came the name Java.

I don't think it is an acronym. It is simply a general purpose, high-level, object-oriented, cross-platform programming language developed by Sun Microsystems

I don't know if it stands for anything, it's not spelled in all caps, but just Java--like coffee, or the Indonesian island. It might just be a name, like Windows or Macintosh.
