Declawing my kitty.....

I've thought about having our 4 month old kitten declawed. She's been scratching the couch and the carpet. It drives me nuts. I worry though that if she ever gets outside and has to fend for herself that she won't be able to fight of prey, a dog or whatever. Does anyone have a declawed cat. Can they still fend for themselves?

Don't declaw the poor kitty. :-( Instead go to your local pet store and get the Soft Paws. These are little plastic covers that goes over her claws (they're glued on). She can still scratch but it won't cause any harm to your furniture. These are NOT permanent though. You have to apply another pair after about 3 months. You get 4 pairs in a package for about $20 at Pet Smart.

I've never heard of that. I will check it out. Doesn't it drive the cat crazy though having something glued to her paw?

I agree. The cats never seem to notice they are there. Well once she got over the whole "my nails are bright pink" thing. lol Here is the website http://www.softpaws.com sooooo many pretty colors too and on the site you can see what they look like and read what other owners are saying about them. Good luck hon.

NO, they cannot defend themselves. If you get the kitten declawed - you HAVE to keep her safe inside. Better solution (especially at her age), get her things she can scratch, kitty treats AND a plastic spray bottle with plain water. When she scratches something she shouldn't, say NO and a quick squirt of water will stop her. When she scratches where she should, tell her how good she is and give her a "kitty treat". She is young enough that she can easily learn what to scratch and what not it scratch.

Awwwwww poor kitty i dont think she should be declawed. she will definatley not be able to defend her self from anything.. God forbid she does get outside she could die.. or get really hurt.. I don't think its a good idea at all.

My cat is 12 years old and was never declawed. Even though she scratches sometimes, she has done very little damage. She was trained very well to use her scratching post. Buy the book, "How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want" by Warren Eckstein. Not only is it a cute read...it will really help you raise your kitten.
I'm not a fan of declawing. Do some research on the web and you will learn some things that will really make you not want to do it. It's the reason it is illegal in the U.K. I just have made sure my cat has NO interest in going outside. She also has a reflective collar and a license just in case. I would worry about her more getting hit by a car than another animal. Can you imagine not knowing if you cat was going to come home each night?

Why is it illegal in the U.K.?
Jimbo, I would probably do anything to keep from hearing one of your "sermons"! lol

It's illegal in the UK and most other countries except USA because of what it actually involves. "Declawing" is actually cutting off the last joint of each toe. It's like cutting off your baby's fingers so that he won't grow up to bite her nails.

The first poster is right -- train her.
I have a declawed cat that we adopted this way. She's so sad. She'll try to climb my leg like her other clawed kitties and can't do it. She'll jump from the couch to the window and without her front claws, she falls off if she doesn't jump hard enough.
It's a cruel and vicious mutilation that involves 10 ampuations of a cat's feet. It's not a a manicure or a simple clipping. It's 10 amputations of each of the cat's toes.
