The books only work for people who read them and put the practical information to good use. Many people accomplish the first goal and read the book on self improvement. Most fail to actually learn from what they have read. The best self-improvement book that I have used is called "Choice Theory" by Dr William Glasser. The book focuses on the issue of personal choice. Many people are stuck in the belief that others are responsible for their misery, therefore they can never escape it. Nothing could be farther from the truth. After I discovered my own personal freedom through choice, I no longer suffered in misery. Any author who can write a book that contains useful information that can be applied by the reader to better themselves deserves to be compensated for their work. Even if the reader doesn't do what is required for improvement. Self-Improvement is not for the faint of heart. It is the hardest thing that I have ever worked to achieve in my life. Good Luck to you!
