3D computer graphic cartoons

What do you think about this way of realizing cartoons movies? Is it really needed to use 3d technology? Or perhaps sometimes it's only "fashion"? I mean...there are some great one (i especially liked Shrek, and there are other ones good), but it seems now everything HAS to be done in 3d, or worse anyone HAS to do something in 3D, even with a poor plot (i.e: I hate shark tale :\). Furthermore some cartoon movies are going to be very realistic and in the next yeras we could see the paradox of a cartoon that don't seems a cartoon :P
