How important is a Business plan?

There are companies who start without a biz plan.. later develop one.. There are famous companies like HP, Sony, 3M etc who didnt have a concrete biz plan, yet they are giants now.. The question is: While starting a new business, do you think a business plan is quintessential? or it develops over the period of time?
